Manchester United got the better of Tottenham as they emerged 3-0 winners from their Women’s Super League clash.
Tottenham travelled to the Leigh Sports Village in search of their first win against United, but the Reds started the better and rarely looked back.
Jane Ross came close to scoring early on with a right-footed shot but it was easily saved by Chloe Morgan, standing in for the injured Becky Spencer.
As the fog grew, so did United’s frustration, and Tottenham were able to settle slightly, coming close to a goal with a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box by Josie Green.
It was only after half-time that Manchester United were able to break the deadlock, scoring twice in seven minutes. Skipper Katie Zelem found the net from a penalty in the 58th minute, after which Jess Sigsworth also bagged herself a goal from a well-rehearsed corner kick.
Despite Tottenham’s efforts – they hit the woodwork twice – the hosts found the net once again three minutes from the end through Zelem’s fine effort, replicating their 3-0 win against Tottenham back in October.
A late scuffle between the sides, which saw Reds substitute Ella Toone sent off, did nothing to dampen their mood as they move ahead of the Spurs with two games in hand.
